Cannes will start some speculation at its conclusion but it will be a few months before getting solid vibes about this year’s Oscar contest. Still, we’re going to try to get a sense of where things stand at this moment.

Introductions

Wesley Lovell: We’re still fairly early in the season to make too many accurate predictions. For the most part, I pruned out some of the titles that don’t seem to have built much of a following (On Swift Horses, Bob Trevino Likes It, and My Dead Friend Zoe). It’s still too early to tell what will emerge victorious there or if it will have an effect on the Oscar race like Anora did. For now, this is what things look like with very few changes (such as Sinners moving into contention in a few places and Hamnet feeling more like a contender than I originally thought).
Pete Patrick: Stronger reviews for Sinners make it the one film already released that should have no problem securing multiple nominations this year.
Thomas LaTourette: Ryan Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, has caught on with the public and is suddenly appearing on all sorts of Oscar lists too. The early release date can hurt films, but Everything Everywhere All at Once showed that they can win big at the Oscars. I have not seen it yet but am intrigued to see the film that has become so big. Will it hold on to capture a slew of Oscar nominations? Only time will tell. While I have Wicked: For Good in a number of places, I do wonder if it will be as successful as the first half when it comes to the Oscars. Several films like Hamnet, Sentimental Value and Deliver Me from Nowhere all sound good on paper, but we will not know much about them for a while. It is only a month since my first predictions, but these start to feel a little better.
