The British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) have announced their longlists. These are the semifinalists for nominations at this year’s BAFTA awards.
(Updated: 10:10am Central) Big news in several categories this morning. Here are some of the highlights. Major Best Picture misses: American Fiction (didn’t do well elsewhere either), The Color Purple (same), May December (same), and Saltburn (especially surprising considering how many appearances the film made on the lists and then to miss out on the top one). May December was shut out almost everywhere with even Charles Melton not making the list. Julianne Moore made it though. Among animated films, Robot Dreams and Suzume are absent, though Suzume may have been eligible last year considering its release window. Todd Haynes is the big exception in Director. Franz Rogowski, Natalie Portman, Sterling K. Brown, Melton, John Magaro, Glenn Howerton, Penélope Cruz, and Rachel McAdams are glaring omissions in the acting categories. Original Score saw several notable titles missing: The Boy and the Heron, Elemental, Society of the Snow, and The Zone of Interest, all of which were thought to be major Oscar contenders.
Other craft category notable misses include American Fiction, The Holdovers, and Past Lives absent in Film Editing; The Color Purple and Priscilla out in Costume Design; no Society of the Snow in Makeup; The Creator and The Killer didn’t make it into Sound; and Godzilla Minus One, Society of the Snow, and Rebel Moon: Part One weren’t on the list in Visual Effects.
Those are all the biggest surprises this year. We might have even more shake-ups coming depending on other guild nominations in the next two weeks.
