A lot of Oscar’s top contenders are here but several are missing. Nickel Boys and Sing Sing did poorly with BAFTA voters. Overall, here are the surprise omissions and inclusions. Rather than listing them out here, I’ll inset them within the below to make it easier to follow. Certain categories will not have an addendum set of notes as they don’t correllate to the Oscars with one exception for a new category the Academy introduced this year.
Longlists Tallies
(15) Emilia Pérez
(14) Conclave

The Longlists
BEST FILM
10 films will advance in the Best Film category. 115 films eligible for this category were submitted for consideration. All film-voting members of BAFTA vote to determine the longlist, nominations and overall winner.
Anora
The Apprentice
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Kneecap
The Substance
Wicked
What’s Missing? Challengers, Hard Truths, Nickel Boys, A Real Pain, September 5, and Sing Sing.
What Surprised? The Apprentice and Kneecap.
Additional Commentary: Kneecap is the kind of British film that makes it onto these lists based solely on its country of origin. Apprentice is a more unusual inclusion. While some of the omissions aren’t terribly surprising, Nickel Boys, A Real Pain, and Sing Sing are all likely contenders for a Best Picture nomination and missing here likely dooms their Oscar chances, at least in terms of an upset victory like that of Moonlight.
OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
15 films will advance in the Outstanding British Film category. All film voting members of BAFTA vote to determine the longlist (of which the top five are nominated). A jury selects the remaining five nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film. 63 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
Back to Black
Bird
Blitz
Civil War
Conclave
Gladiator II
Hard Truths
Kneecap
Lee
Love Lies Bleeding
The Outrun
Paddington in Peru
Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
We Live in Time
Wicked Little Letters
Additional Commentary: I have no comment on this list as they seem very much like an expected list of inclusions.
OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER
10 films will advance in the Outstanding Debut category. A jury determines the longlist, nominations and overall winner in this category. 42 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
Bring Them Down
Grand Theft Hamlet
Hoard
Kneecap
Monkey Man
On Falling
Santosh
Sister Midnight
The Taste of Mango
The Teacher
Additional Commentary: Pretty well expected inclusions and nothing that stands out as being omitted.
CHILDREN’S & FAMILY FILM
Eight films will advance in the Children’s & Family Film category. A jury determines the longlist, nominations and overall winner in this category. 19 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
Flow
Kensuke’s Kingdom
Piece By Piece
Spellbound
That Christmas
Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
The Wild Robot
Young Woman and the Sea
Additional Commentary: This category doesn’t exist at the Oscars, like the prior two. However, it has some very interesting dynamics. Of the eight films, only one isn’t animated (Young Woman and the Sea). Of the remaining seven, four (Flow, That Christmas, Wallace and Gromit, and The Wild Robot) are also on the Animated Film list while none of Disney’s animated products are here. It’s a very strange list that will generate a very subpar list of nominees based on the receptions of some of these films. With the overlap of seven animated films, the big question is: why is there a need for this category?
FILM NOT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
10 films will advance in the Film Not in the English Language category. All BAFTA film-voting members were invited to join an opt-in chapter to determine the longlist. This chapter will vote to nominate five films. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film. 40 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
All We Imagine as Light
Black Dog (Gou zhen)
The Count of Monte Cristo
Emilia Pérez
Flow
The Girl with the Needle
I’m Still Here (Ainda Estou Aqui)
Kneecap
La Chimera
The Seed of the Sacred Fig
What’s Missing? Armand, Dahomey, From Ground Zero, How to Make Millions before Granda Dies, Santosh, Touch, Universal Language, Vermiglio, and Waves
What Surprised? All We Imagine as Light, Black Dog (Gou zhen), La Chimera, and The Count of Monte Cristo
Additional Commentary: Of course, the Academy’s eligibility rules are starkly different. As such, the What’s Missing list is films that were on the Oscar shortlist but not on this one and the What Surprised list is the films that were included here but not with the Academy. Unrelated but I do have a grammatic issue with La Chimera being alphabetized under “L” when “La” is an indefinite article. It’s either convenient for them to not think too heavily about it or they don’t know.
DOCUMENTARY
10 films will advance in the Documentary category. All BAFTA film-voting members were invited to join an opt-in chapter to determine the longlist (of which the top two are nominated). A jury selects the remaining three nominations, In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film. 71 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
The Bibi Files
Black Box Diaries
Daughters
Elton John: Never Too Late
I Am: Celine Dion
Made In England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger
No Other Land
The Remarkable Life of Ibelin
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
Will & Harper
What’s Missing? Dahomey, Eno, Frida, Hollywoodgate, Porcelain War, Queendom, Sugarcane, Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, and Union
What Surprised? Elton John: Never Too Late, I Am: Celine Dion, Made In England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
Additional Commentary: This is similar to the prior category in that the Academy’s rules are vastly different than BAFTAs. That means, this list is more what was on Oscar’s shortlist and what wasn’t. What’s most interesting about this list is that Super/Man made it in here but not with Oscar voters. Snobbery?
ANIMATED FILM
Eight films will advance in the Animated Film category. All BAFTA film-voting members were invited to join an opt-in chapter to determine the longlist and will vote to nominate four films. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film. 16 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
Despicable Me 4
Flow
Inside Out 2
Memoir of a Snail
Moana 2
That Christmas
Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
The Wild Robot
What’s Missing? Chicken for Linda!, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Kung Fu Panda 4, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Mars Express, Piece by Piece, Spellbound, and Tranformers One
What Surprised? Nothing
Additional Commentary: The Academy has a shortlist but many of those films aren’t in the running. What’s interesting is the list of films that were on the Academy’s list but not here, including the three films in the Children’s/Family Film category. Interesting also that three of these films have been nominated at various precursors (Chicken for Linda!, Mars Express, and Transformers One but not here.
DIRECTOR
10 films will advance in the Director category. Members of the Directing chapter vote for their top 10 to determine the longlist, of which the top women and men directors, and directors who identify as non-binary/gender diverse and any mixed-gender directing teams (within the voting results range of the top 10 women/men directors) will be longlisted to a max of 11, with gender parity upheld between women and men directors. The Directing chapter will vote for the six nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film. 189 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
All We Imagine as Light, Payal Kapadia
Anora, Sean Baker
The Brutalist, Brady Corbet
Conclave, Edward Berger
Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve
Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard
La Chimera, Alice Rohrwacher
Lee, Ellen Kuras
The Outrun, Nora Fingscheidt
The Substance, Coralie Fargeat
What’s Missing? Jon M. Chu, James Mangold, and Mike Leigh
What Surprised? Alice Rohrwacher, Ellen Kuras, and Nora Fingscheidt
Additional Commentary: Mike Leigh is about as popular with BAFTA voters as anyone and his absence here is quite telling. He wasn’t a very strong contender with the Oscars but James Mangold’s film, A Complete Unknown had a good chance of a Best Picture nomination so his absence is surprising. Above all, Jon M. Chu has to be upset over missing the cut. His was a film that’s sure to pick up numerous nominations and without him making this list, his film’s chances take a major nosedive.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
10 films will advance in the Original Screenplay category. Members of the Writers chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the winning film. 74 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
All We Imagine as Light
Anora
The Apprentice
The Brutalist
Challengers
Civil War
Heretic
Kneecap
A Real Pain
The Substance
What’s Missing? Hard Truths
What Surprised? All We Imagine as Light, The Apprentice, Civil War, Heretic, and Kneecap
Additional Commentary: What’s most surprising is that Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths did not make this list. He’s one of those automatic nominees, which suggests they focused hard on not including him. The surprises are fairly surprising. With the exception of All We Imagine as Light, none of these seemed like surefire contenders.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
10 films will advance in the Adapted Screenplay category. Members of the Writers chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the winning film. 60 eligible films were submitted for consideration.
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Lee
Nickel Boys
Nightbitch
The Outrun
Sing Sing
Wicked
What’s Missing? Nosferatu, The Piano Lesson, and The Wild Robot
What Surprised? Lee, Nightbitch, The Outrun.
Additional Commentary: We have another situation where the surprises aren’t major contenders for the Oscars but the same could be said of what’s missing. They are all periphery contenders, not major ones. Nickel Boys finds its sole shortlist citation here and that is worrying.
LEADING ACTRESS
10 performances will advance in the Leading Actress category. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the longlist, of which the top seven are automatically longlisted. A longlisting jury selects a further three performances from those ranked 8-13 in the chapter vote, to create a longlist of 10. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the six nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning performance. 82 performances were submitted for consideration.
Amy Adams, Nightbitch
Cynthia Erivo, Wicked
Demi Moore, The Substance
Karla Sofía Gascón, Emilia Pérez
Kate Winslet, Lee
Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Hard Truths
Marisa Abela, Back To Black
Mikey Madison, Anora
Nicole Kidman, Babygirl
Saoirse Ronan, The Outrun
What’s Missing? Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie, and Tilda Swinton
What Surprised? Marisa Abela
Additional Commentary: Marisa Abela’s inclusion is likely an attempt to keep the Brits well respected, but it’s surprising they went with her rather than Tilda Swinton. While Swinton’s candidacy has been fading since the film received mostly negative notices, Pamela Anderson needed this to bolster her Oscar chances which were already fairly minimal but will be non-existent without a SAG nomination. Angelina Jolie, on the other hand, is one of the year’s top 6 or 7 contenders in the category. It’s a tight race this year but she was thought to be running fifth with several other people. To miss here is certainly alarming for her chances.
LEADING ACTOR
10 performances will advance in the Leading Actor category.
Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
Colman Domingo, Sing Sing
Daniel Craig, Queer
Dev Patel, Monkey Man
Hugh Grant, Heretic
Jude Law, Firebrand
Kingsley Ben Adir, Bob Marley: One Love
Ralph Fiennes, Conclave
Sebastian Stan, The Apprentice
Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown
What’s Missing? No one.
What Surprised? Dev Patel, Jude Law, Kingsley Ben Adir
Additional Commentary: Patel and Law are Brits, so their inclusion is de rigeur. Ben Adir, on the other hand, was thought to be a contender until his movie was savaged by critics. Perhaps the utter lack of minority actors in this list (outside of Domingo, Patel, and Ben Adir, suggests his was an attempt to avoid a too-white slate.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
10 performances will advance in the Supporting Actress category. 180 performances were submitted for consideration.
Adriana Paz, Emilia Pérez
Ariana Grande, Wicked
Emily Watson, Small Things Like These
Felicity Jones, The Brutalist
Isabella Rossellini, Conclave
Jamie Lee Curtis, The Last Showgirl
Margaret Qualley, The Substance
Michele Austin, Hard Truths
Selena Gomez, Emilia Pérez
Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez
What’s Missing? Joan Chen, Danielle Deadwyler, Carol Kane
What Surprised? Michele Austin, Jamie Lee Curtis, Adriana Paz, and Emily Watson
Additional Commentary: Watson is definitely a Brit inclusion. Paz suggests love for Emilia Pérez is pretty strong while Austin wasn’t expected but welcome. This is a fairly diverse roster of candidates and none of them can really be considered disappointing. That Curtis made it in over Anderson is a bit surprising but it almost feels like they ran out of candidates and filled in random people in that regard.
SUPPORTING ACTOR
10 performances will advance in the Supporting Actor category. 271 performances were submitted for consideration.
Clarence Maclin, Sing Sing
Denzel Washington, Gladiator II
Edward Norton, A Complete Unknown
Guy Pearce, The Brutalist
Harris Dickinson, Babygirl
Jeremy Strong, The Apprentice
Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
Mark Eydelshteyn, Anora
Stanley Tucci, Conclave
Yura Borisov, Anora
What’s Missing? John Lithgow
What Surprised? Harris Dickinson and Mark Eydelshteyn
Additional Commentary: Anora was bolstered by Edyelshteyn’s inclusion while Dickinson is a classic Brit nominee that no one really things has much of a chance. For Lithgow to miss is a bit surprising, especially since Tucci is included, but he hasn’t gained a lot of traction this year so that might be a contributing factor.
CASTING
10 films will advance in the Casting category. Members of the Casting chapter vote to determine the longlist. A jury selects the five nominations and in the final round all film-voting members select the winning film. 119 films were submitted for consideration. A supporting Statement can be submitted and published on BAFTA View. That Jonathan Bailey couldn’t make the cut feeds into the notion that Wicked isn’t quite the slam dunk we once thought.
Anora
The Apprentice
Back To Black
Blitz
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Emilia Pérez
Kneecap
Wicked
Additional Commentary: This is another category that the Academy doesn’t have quite yet. It’s coming. So looking at this can give you an idea of what they are looking for. Big casts are sure to be included but the absence of The Piano Lesson is a bit shocking, though the film seems not to have been cited anywhere, so it was perhaps not eligible or no one really liked it.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
10 films will advance in the Cinematography category. Members of the Cinematography chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 155 films were submitted for consideration.
Anora
The Brutalist
Civil War
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Gladiator II
Nosferatu
The Substance
What’s Missing? Maria, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.
What Surprised? Anora, Civil War, and Emilia Pérez.
Additional Commentary: This category doesn’t have to match up with Best Film but it has to be a good sign that both Anora and Emilia Pérez overperformed in these longlists. Meanwhile Maria gets stiffed, Nickel Boys (the most honored cinematography of the year so far) is ignored, and Wicked was forgotten.
COSTUME DESIGN
10 films will advance in the Costume Design category. Members of the Costume and Makeup & Hair chapters vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 114 films were submitted for consideration.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
Blitz
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Gladiator II
Nosferatu
Wicked
What’s Missing? Maria
What Surprised? Emilia Pérez
Additional Commentary: While Maria is a classic kind of nominee, it isn’t terribly showy, which hurts its chances. The same is true of Emilia Pérez, but it overperformed so make of that what you will.
EDITING
10 films will advance in the Editing category. Members of the Editing chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 170 films were submitted for consideration.
Anora
Challengers
Civil War
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Gladiator II
Kneecap
The Substance
What’s Missing? The Brutalist and Wicked
What Surprised? Kneecap
Additional Commentary: That Kneecap inclusion will almost certainly be criticized, especially since it seems like a Brits-only kind of selection while one of the year’s major Best Film contenders, The Brutalist, completely whiffs. Wicked is a little more understandable but it further supports the prospect that the film will underperform.
MAKE UP & HAIR
10 films will advance in the Make Up & Hair category. Members of the Costume Design and the Make Up & Hair chapters vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 106 films were submitted for consideration. A supporting Statement can be submitted and published on BAFTA View.
The Apprentice
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
Blitz
A Complete Unknown
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Joker: Folie À Deux
Nosferatu
The Substance
Wicked
What’s Missing? A Different Man, Maria, and Waltzing for Brando
What Surprised? Blitz, A Complete Unknown, and Joker: Folie à Deux.
Additional Commentary: The omissions/inclusions lists are entirely populated by films that were either on the Academy’s shortlist or weren’t. A Different Man missing out here is surprising but based on its lack of appearance elsewhere, it might not be eligible this year. The other two are a little more understandable since neither seem like major Oscar players. The three non-shortlisted set are certainly unusual, though the latter two were in contention for that category before the shortlist came out, so who knows.
ORIGINAL SCORE
10 films will advance in the Original Score category. Members of the Music chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 118 films were submitted for consideration. Music cue sheets are provided by the entrants and published on BAFTA View.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
Blitz
The Brutalist
Conclave
Emilia Pérez
Gladiator II
Nosferatu
The Outrun
The Substance
The Wild Robot
What’s Missing? Alien: Romulus, Babygirl, Blink Twice, Challengers, The Fire Inside, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, Inside Out 2, The Room Next Door, Sing Sing, The Six Triple Eight, Wicked, and Young Woman and the Sea
What Surprised? The Outrun and The Substance
Additional Commentary: Another shortlist pared down. The two surprises don’t make a lot of sense nor do the exclusions for the most part. Only Challengers missing really seems like a surprise.
PRODUCTION DESIGN
10 films will advance in the Production Design category. Members of the Production Design chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 131 films were submitted for consideration.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
Blitz
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Gladiator II
Nosferatu
The Substance
Wicked
What’s Missing? Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Megalopolis
What Surprised? None
Additional Commentary: All of the inclusions are Oscar contenders for sure. They had to narrow down, so the two that missed aren’t entirely shocking.
SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS
10 films will advance in the Special Visual Effect category. Members of the SVFX chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 82 films were submitted for consideration. A supporting Statement and a show-reel of the SVFX work (up to five minutes in duration) can be submitted and are published on BAFTA View.
Alien: Romulus
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
Better Man
Civil War
Deadpool & Wolverine
Dune: Part Two
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Gladiator II
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Wicked
What’s Missing? Mufasa: The Lion King and Twisters
What Surprised? Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Additional Commentary: It’s surprising that Furiosa made it in here but not in Production Design. Beetlejuicex2 has done surprisingly well. Mufasa missing isn’t surprising since it feels more like an animated film than a live-action one, thus where are the actual visual effects; however, Twisters not making the cut is a bit of a surprise.
SOUND
10 films will advance in the Sound category Members of the Sound chapter vote to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film. 149 films were submitted for consideration.
Blitz
The Brutalist
Civil War
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Gladiator II
The Substance
Wicked
What’s Missing? Alien: Romulus, Deadpool & Wolverine, Joker: Folie à Deux, and The Wild Robot
What Surprised? The Brutalist, Civil War, Conclave, and The Substance.
Additional Commentary: Quite a few Oscar shortlisters didn’t make it through while several non-shortlisters did. Conclave and The Brutalist are headscratchers as Best Sound candidates. Neither have particularly memorable soundscapes. The other two make sense while the loud-doesn’t-equal-quality concept certainly applies to three of the four omittees. The Wild Robot is the only one that seems a bit surprising.
BRITISH SHORT ANIMATION
Six films will advance in the British Short Animation category. A jury votes to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members are invited to join an opt-in chapter to vote for the overall winning short animation.
Adiós
Mee and Burd
Mog’s Christmas
Plunge
Three Hares
Wander to Wonder
Additional Commentary: The Academy’s eligibility criteria are completely different from BAFTAs in the short film categories and all of these are British shorts. The only overlap is Wander to Wonder.
BRITISH SHORT FILM
Ten films will advance in the British Short Film category. A jury votes to determine the longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members are invited to join an opt-in chapter to vote for the overall winning short film.
The Ban
Clodagh
The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing
Homework
Marion
Milk
Rock, Paper, Scissors
Sister Wives
Stomach Bug
Woodlice
Additional Commentary: Another batch of mostly mismatches. Clodagh is the only one that appears on both Oscar and BAFTA lists.
