Before BAFTA started announcing winners prior to the Oscars, they were idiosyncratic to the extreme. Although the nominees this year came after the Oscars, their awards come before, and their uniqueness comes through strongly this year. Let’s start with the surprises. Robert Aramayo picking up Best Actor over Oscar nominees Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, and Ethan Hawke is certainly out of left field and leaves only SAG to create any clarity. Then there’s the Sean Penn victory over Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, and Stellan Skarsgård as well was Wunmi Mosaku over Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Teyana Taylor. That’s three acting prizes that went in obscure directions. Of course, Penn has never won at BAFTA and Mosaku grew up in England, but the Aramayo win is utterly confusing. Almost all of the craft awards went expected directions or at least directions that made sense so there’s nothing much there but the I Swear win in Casting also creates an interesting dynamic being one of the few casting prizes to get clues off of. Additionally, Sinners does not appear to be mounting a serious challenge to One Battle, at least across the pond.
BAFTA returns to its quirky roots while making the Oscar prediction waters murky as hell.
