BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) is one of the biggest precursors currently out there. Their nominations won’t be coming out before the Oscar nominations, so these longlists (or semifinalists) are the best we can do right now. Commentary added (10:31AM CST).

The Longlists
BEST FILM
10 films are advancing in the Best Film category out of 109 eligible films submitted for consideration.
The Ballad of Wallis Island
Bugonia
Frankenstein
Hamnet
I Swear
Marty Supreme
Nuremberg
One Battle After Another
Sentimental Value
Sinners
What’s Missing? It Was Just an Accident, No Other Choice, The Secret Agent, Sirât, Train Dreams, Wicked: For Good are the major ones not present and were certainly eligible (given their presence on other lists).
What Surprised? The British entries always surprise but The Ballad of Wallis Island and I Swear aren’t the kinds of films that the Academy typically goes for so the other 8 might well be sure Oscar nominees if nothing else.
Additional Commentary: Bugonia‘s star is certainly on the rise. The film wasn’t a strong contender before the two SAG inclusions but with those plus this, we have to consider it a strong possibility.
OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
15 films are advancing in the Outstanding British Film category out of 70 eligible films submitted for consideration. All film voting members of BAFTA vote to determine the Outstanding British Film longlist (of which the top five are nominated). A jury selects the remaining five nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film.
28 Years Later
Ballad of a Small Player
The Ballad of Wallis Island
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
The Choral
Die My Love
Goodbye June
H Is for Hawk
Hamnet
I Swear
Mr. Burton
Pillion
The Roses
Steve
Warfare
Additional Commentary: The two in the top race are here, so those are likely guaranteed nominations. None of these really stand out as major contenders but it’s surprising that the poorly received Ballad of a Small Player and The Roses made the cut.
OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER
10 films are advancing in the Outstanding Debut category out of 43 eligible films submitted for consideration. A jury determines the Outstanding Debut longlist, nominations and overall winner in this category.
The Ceremony
The Man in My Basement
Mother Vera
My Father’s Shadow
Pillion
Ocean with David Attenborough
The Shadow Scholars
Urchin
A Want In Her
Wasteman
Additional Commentary: Not a lot to see here, Pillion and Urchin seem the most likely nominees out of this bunch but you never know with BAFTA voters.
CHILDREN’S & FAMILY FILM
Eight films are advancing in the Children’s & Family Film category out of 14 eligible films submitted for consideration. A jury determines the Children’s & Family Film longlist, nominations and overall winner.
Arco
Boong
Elio
Grow
How to Train Your Dragon
Lilo & Stitch
Little Amelie
Zootropolis 2
Additional Commentary: It doesn’t appear that KPop Demon Hunters was released in Britain, so that may explain its inclusion. How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon might help this category finally diverge from the animated-only slate of last year. There’s also Boong and Grow and those could surprise with nominations since they’ve shown up nowhere else. Note also the different names for Little Amelie (shorter) and Zootropolis 2 (more interesting name).
FILM NOT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
10 films are advancing in the Film not in the English Language category out of 40 eligible films submitted for consideration. All BAFTA film-voting members were invited to join an opt-in chapter to determine the Film not in the English Language longlist. This chapter will vote to nominate five films. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film.
La Grazia
It Was Just an Accident
Left-Handed Girl
No Other Choice
Nouvelle Vague
Rental Family
The Secret Agent
Sentimental Value
Sirât
The Voice of Hind Rajab
What’s Missing? Belén among others.
What Surprised? Rental Family isn’t fully in Japanese, so it is a bit of a shocker.
Additional Commentary: With their different eligibility rules, you’re not going to see any of the missing Oscar contenders here.
DOCUMENTARY
10 films are advancing in the Documentary category out of 61 eligible films submitted for consideration. Members of the Documentary chapter vote to determine the Documentary longlist. A jury selects the five nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film.
2000 Meters To Andriivka
Apocalypse In The Tropics
Becoming Led Zeppelin
Cover-Up
The Librarians
Mr Nobody Against Putin
Ocean with David Attenborough
One to One: John & Yoko
The Perfect Neighbour
Riefenstahl
What’s Missing? The Alabama Solution, Come See Me in the Good Light, My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow, and more.
What Surprised? Becoming Led Zeppelin, The Librarians, Ocean with David Attenborough, One to One, and Riefenstahl didn’t make the Oscar shortlist but are here.
Additional Commentary: Again more BAFTA eligibility differences. Still no Orwell: 2+2=5.
ANIMATED FILM
Six films are advancing in the Animated Film category out of 10 eligible films submitted for consideration. All BAFTA film-voting members were invited to join an opt-in chapter to determine the Animated Film longlist and will vote to nominate three films. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film.
Arco
The Bad Guys 2
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle
Elio
Little Amelie
Zootropolis 2
What’s Missing? A Magnificent Life, KPop Demon Hunters, Endless Cookie, and Scarlet.
What Surprised? Nothing here is really surprising but it is the first love The Bad Guys 2 has really gotten.
Additional Commentary: A strangely short list. They are going for only three titles this year and it’s pretty difficult to guess which three since I can imagine four or five of these making the cut.
DIRECTOR
Ten films are advancing in the Director category out of 182 eligible films submitted for consideration. Members of the Directing chapter vote for their top 10 to determine the Director longlist, of which the top women and men directors, and directors who identify as non-binary/gender diverse and any mixed-gender directing teams (within the voting results range of the top 10 women/men directors) will be longlisted to a max of 11, with gender parity upheld between women and men directors. The Directing chapter will vote for the six nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning film.
Bugonia (Yorgos Lanthimos)
Die My Love (Lynne Ramsay)
Hamnet (Chloé Zhao)
A House of Dynamite (Kathryn Bigelow)
Marty Supreme (Josh Safdie)
One Battle After Another (Paul Thomas Anderson)
Rental Family (Hikari)
Sentimental Value (Joachim Trier)
Sinners (Ryan Coogler)
The Voice of Hind Rajab (Kaouther Ben Hania)
Who’s Missing? Guillermo del Toro, Jafar Panahi, Park Chan-wook, Clint Bentley, Jon M. Chu.
What Surprised? Hikari, Kathryn Bigelow, Kaouther Ben Hania.
Additional Commentary: The biggest miss is Guillermo del Toro. His film is on the Best Film slate but not here, that’s going to be a huge hit for his candidacy, though the DGA nomination will likely counter that. Panahi and Park both needed this one to stay in the conversation but Trier and Ben Hania, overlooked at the DGA, did make the cut and that boosts their films’ chances.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Ten films are advancing in the Original Screenplay category out of 74 eligible films submitted for consideration. Members of the Writers chapter vote to determine the Original Screenplay longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the winning film.
Blue Moon
A House of Dynamite
I Swear
Is This Thing On?
It Was Just an Accident
Marty Supreme
The Secret Agent
Sentimental Value
Sinners
Weapons
What’s Missing? If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Jay Kelly, Sorry, Baby, The Voice of Hind Rajab.
What Surprised? A House of Dynamite, I Swear.
Additional Commentary: None of the major contenders is missing though this does hurt Jay Kelly the most.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Ten films are advancing in the Adapted Screenplay category out of 64 eligible films submitted for consideration. Members of the Writers chapter vote to determine the Adapted Screenplay longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the winning film.
28 Years Later
The Ballad of Wallis Island
Bugonia
Frankenstein
Hamnet
Nuremberg
One Battle After Another
Pillion
Train Dreams
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
What’s Missing? No Other Choice.
What Surprised? 28 Years Later, The Ballad of Wallis Island, Nuremberg, Pillion.
Additional Commentary: It’s really the inclusions that are surprising rather than the omissions, though this might also be a death knell for No Other Choice at the Oscars.
LEADING ACTRESS
Ten performances are advancing in the Leading Actress category out of 84 performances submitted for consideration. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the Leading Actress longlist, of which the top seven are automatically longlisted. A longlisting jury selects a further three performances from those ranked 8-13 in the chapter vote, to create a longlist of 10. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the six nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning performance.
Jessie Buckley, Hamnet
Rose Byrne, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
Cynthia Erivo, Wicked: For Good
Kate Hudson, Song Sung Blue
Chase Infiniti, One Battle After Another
Jennifer Lawrence, Die My Love
Renate Reinsve, Sentimental Value
Andrea Riseborough, Dragonfly
Emma Stone, Bugonia
Tessa Thompson, Hedda
What’s Missing? Amanda Seyfried.
What Surprised? Andrea Riseborough.
Additional Commentary: Any thought of another Riseborough shocker will be dashed by the fact that it’s not eligible at the Oscars. Thus we have a pretty strong list of contenders with nearly every one expected showing up. That said, Laura Dern and June Squibb needed something to bolster their flagging campaigns.
LEADING ACTOR
Ten performances are advancing in the Leading Actor category out of 108 performances submitted for consideration. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the Leading Actor longlist, of which the top seven are automatically longlisted. A longlisting jury selects a further three performances from those ranked 8-13 in the chapter vote, to create a longlist of 10. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the six nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning performance.
Robert Aramayo, I Swear
Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme
Russell Crowe, Nuremberg
Leonardo DiCaprio, One Battle After Another
Joel Edgerton, Train Dreams
Ethan Hawke, Blue Moon
Michael B. Jordan, Sinners
Harry Melling, Pillion
Cillian Murphy, Steve
Jesse Plemons, Bugonia
What’s Missing? Wagner Moura, Dwayne Johnson, Lee Byung-hun, Jeremy Allen White.
What Surprised? Robert Aramayo, Harry Melling, Cillian Murphy.
Additional Commentary: Moura takes the biggest hit of this group. Missing at SAG and now here suggests he’s probably running a bit behind but could still eke out a citation at the now-more-international-friendly Oscars.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Ten performances are advancing in the Supporting Actress category out of 208 performances submitted for consideration. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the Supporting Actress longlist, of which the top seven are automatically longlisted. A longlisting jury selects a further three performances from those ranked 8-13 in the chapter vote, to create a longlist of 10. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the six nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning performance.
Odessa A’zion, Marty Supreme
Brenda Blethyn, Dragonfly
Ariana Grande, Wicked: For Good
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Sentimental Value
Amy Madigan, Weapons
Wunmi Mosaku, Sinners
Carey Mulligan, The Ballad of Wallis Island
Gwyneth Paltrow, Marty Supreme
Teyana Taylor, One Battle After Another
Emily Watson, Hamnet
What’s Missing? Elle Fanning, Regina Hall, Nina Hoss.
What Surprised? Brenda Blethyn, Carey Mulligan, Emily Watson.
Additional Commentary: Fanning misses again. This makes the second time she’s missed out on a crucial citation and that destroys the last of her potential carry-over nomination chances. Most of the main players are here with Gwyneth Paltrow finally getting recognition for a performance many thought would be farther ahead than Odessa A’zion’s.
SUPPORTING ACTOR
Ten performances are advancing in the Supporting Actor category out of 301 performances submitted for consideration. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the Supporting Actor longlist, of which the top seven are automatically longlisted. A longlisting jury selects a further three performances from those ranked 8-13 in the chapter vote, to create a longlist of 10. Members of the Acting chapter vote to determine the six nominations. In the final round all film-voting members vote to determine the winning performance.
Benicio Del Toro, One Battle After Another
Jacob Elordi, Frankenstein
Delroy Lindo, Sinners
Paul Mescal, Hamnet
Peter Mullan, I Swear
Sean Penn, One Battle After Another
Adam Sandler, Jay Kelly
Andrew Scott, Blue Moon
Alexander Skarsgård, Pillion
Stellan Skarsgård, Sentimental Value
What’s Missing? William H. Macy.
What Surprised? Peter Mullan.
Additional Commentary: Not a lot of surprises here. Most of these have been cited at some point in Oscar season, though Adam Sandler has to be excited that his candidacy is still in play after his miss at the Globes.
CASTING
Ten films are advancing in the Casting category out of 121 films submitted for consideration. Members of the Casting chapter vote to determine the Casting longlist. A jury selects the five nominations and in the final round all film-voting members select the winning film.
Frankenstein
Hamnet
A House of Dynamite
I Swear
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Pillion
Sentimental Value
Sinners
Sirat
What’s Missing? Wicked: For Good
What Surprised? A House of Dynamite, I Swear, Pillion, Sirât.
Additional Commentary: Wicked: For Good is the only film that I really expected to see here. A few of these are unlikely to carry over but an interesting batch to be sure.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Ten films are advancing in the Cinematography category out of 159 films submitted for consideration. Members of the Cinematography chapter vote to determine the Cinematography longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film.
Ballad of a Small Player
Bugonia
Die My Love
F1
Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Train Dreams
What’s Missing? Nouvelle Vague, Sirât, Wicked: For Good.
What Surprised? Nothing.
Additional Commentary: All of these were on the Oscar shortlist so I’m not particularly surprised by any of them. I wouldn’t count out Nouvelle Vague though. The Academy cinematographers really love their black-and-white films.
COSTUME DESIGN
Ten films are advancing in the Costume Design category out of 123 films submitted for consideration. Members of the Costume and Makeup & Hair chapters vote to determine the Costume Design longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film.
Bugonia
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale
Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
Nouvelle Vague
Nuremberg
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Wicked: For Good
What’s Missing? The Testament of Ann Lee, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Phoenician Scheme.
What Surprised? Bugonia, Nuremberg.
Additional Commentary: A couple of surprising inclusions but other than Ann Lee being absent, no genuine shockers.
EDITING
Ten films are advancing in the Editing category out of 178 films submitted for consideration. Members of the Editing chapter vote to determine the Editing longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film.
28 Years Later
Bugonia

Frankenstein
Hamnet
A House of Dynamite
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Weapons
What’s Missing? Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, Train Dreams.
What Surprised? 28 Years Later, A House of Dynamite.
Additional Commentary: We had started to count A House of Dynamite out but here it is. A surprise inclusion that could be fortuitous.
MAKE UP & HAIR
Ten films are advancing in the Make Up & Hair category out of 115 films submitted for consideration. Members of the Costume Design and the Make Up & Hair chapters vote to determine the Make Up & Hair longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film.

Marty Supreme
Nuremberg
One Battle After Another
Sinners
The Smashing Machine
Wicked: For Good
What’s Missing? The Ugly Stepsister, Kokuho.
What Surprised? Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.
Additional Commentary: A few on the Oscar shortlist aren’t here but they largely match up.
ORIGINAL SCORE
Ten films are advancing in the Original Score category out of 112 films submitted for consideration. Members of the Music chapter vote to determine the Original Score longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film.

Marty Supreme
Nuremberg
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Wicked: For Good
What’s Missing? Train Dreams, F1, Sirât, Tron: Ares.
What Surprised? 28 Years Later, Ballad of Wallis Island, Nuremberg.
Additional Commentary: most of the main contenders are here with the exception of the four listed above as “What’s Missing.” They were all Oscar shortlisters and certainly seem like major contenders.
PRODUCTION DESIGN
Ten films are advancing in the Production Design category out of 129 films submitted for consideration. Members of the Production Design chapter vote to determine the Production longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film.

Bugonia
The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
Mickey 17
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Wicked: For Good
What’s Missing? Avatar: Fire and Ash, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Phoenician Scheme.
What Surprised? Ballad of a Small Player, Bugonia.
Additional Commentary: Some of the major Oscar contenders are not here but for the most part, the more broad competitors are.
SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS
Ten films are advancing in the Special Visual Effects category out of 71 films submitted for consideration. Members of the SVFX chapter vote to determine the Special Visual Effects longlist and the nominations. In the final round of voting, all film-voting members will vote for the overall winning film.
Avatar: Fire and Ash
F1
Frankenstein
How to Train Your Dragon
Jurassic World Rebirth
The Lost Bus
Mickey 17
Superman
Tron: Ares
Wicked: For Good
What’s Missing? The Electric State, Sinners.
What Surprised? How to Train Your Dragon, Mickey 17.
Additional Commentary: If you compare the Oscar shortlist and this one, you’ll find one shocking omission, Sinners.

What’s Missing? Sirât, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, Supreman.
What Surprised? The Lost Bus, Warfare.
Additional Commentary: Another batch of swaps, this time more of the Oscar shortlisters are gone. Surprising.
BRITISH SHORT ANIMATION
Six films are advancing in the British Short Animation category. The Shorts opt-in chapter and jury vote to determine the British Short Animation longlist and a jury determines the nominations. All film-voting members will vote for the overall winning short animation.
Brain Space
Cardboard
Death’s Peak
Ovary-Acting
Solstice
Two Black Boys in Paradise
Additional Commentary: Cardboard is the only film on this list that’s also eligible at the Oscars. The rest are not well known to me so I can’t say much, though I love the title Ovary-Acting.
BRITISH SHORT FILM
Ten films are advancing in the British Short Film category. The Shorts opt-in chapter and jury vote to determine the British Short Film longlist and a jury determines the nominations. All film-voting members will vote for the overall winning short film.
