Now that the Golden Globes is no longer run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, they can now attempt to be as populist as possible. They’ve expanded all categories to six and have a far higher recognition rate for non-American features. That said, A lot of their selections are already Oscar contenders and with now 12 lead contenders, they are trying to improve their predictive quality. While there are some interesting surprises (the performance of Fallen Leaves for example), it’s not clear that these will have any measurable impact.
