It was a big day for films from foreign nations. Emilia Pérez, Flow, and I’m Still Here won big prizes while The Brutalist led the English-language fare. There were no huge surprises, though we all thought things might go differently on the comedy side. This definitely indicates a changed Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The influx of members may have diversified the selections but they may also have doomed their Oscar precursor capabilities. They’ve always been a bit odd at times but these choices are not odd but classy in an international way and that’s not always the way the Academy goes as its recent selections can attest.
