Emilia Pérez had a great day. It joins a small club of films that have secured 13 total nominations. That doesn’t always portend luck as many of those films have struggled with wins. The Brutalist didn’t appear to have any trouble securing its most needed nominations while Wicked picked up a few that weren’t entirely expected either. The big surprise in Best Picture is I’m Still Here, a film that few had thought of as a contender for the category. Nickel Boys thankfully made it in but it and Wicked are the only films about the Black experience in the Best Picture race. Edward Berger missing out for Conclave is a bit surprising but the earlier misses of Conclave in perceptually expected categories foretold that result. Dune: Part Two has to have had the most disappointing morning as several expected citations did not materialize. The president is going to trash the Oscars having nominated The Apprentice for two awards.

It appears that A Complete Unknown did strike at the right time but The Last Showgirl failed to materialize its promises. The warning that Sing Sing was going to get stung materialized with its shutout in Supporting Actor and most importantly Best Picture. Outside of the documentary short film categories most of what happened seemed to traverse expected pathways. We’ll discuss this all more later, I’m sure.
