There’s a point at which the Golden Globes became something of a joke. That was when Pia Zadora won over Elizabeth McGovern, Howard E. Rollins Jr., Kathleen Turner, Rachel Ward, and Craig Wasson. The HCA managed to become a punchline in only their 9th year with the elevation of a trained animal over professional actors like Alison Brie, Sally Hawkins, Ethan Hawke, Sophie Turner, and Alfie Williams. Their selections this year seem designed to create buzz but may have unintentionally damaged their credibility. Who wants to attend a ceremony where they could be beaten by man’s best friend. What’s next, a particularly stunning feline performance? The creative execution of a performance by a tire? How about a scary house? An actor makes choices. A dog performs a trained bit. To conflate the two is ludicrous. The nomination itself was a cute gimmick but a win calls into question their entire judgment and prevents us from discussing their other awards with anything but skepticism.
