Nothing too unusual about these other than that they disagreed fairly well from BAFTA’s nominees. All of the Oscar shortlisters got at least one nomination. If we went solely off the titles that got the most nominations, Dune: Part Two, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Better Man, and Mufasa: The Lion King would take up four of the slots with two-time nominees Civil War, Gladiator II, and Twisters would be battling it out for the final slot. This lines up pretty well with their primary visual effects category with Twisters fitting in over Gladiator II. That said, Civil War reps a nod in supporting visual effects and that’s often been a stepping stone to the top spot. But don’t take these for certain because as BAFTA showed, the narrower voting bloc can sometimes go in a different direction.
