And here we are, the last predictions of the summer and the final set before the trio of fall festivals that will either confirm what we’ve been thinking or redefine everything. Toronto, Venice, and Telluride will tell us a lot and we’ll be back in September with our first predictions post-festival. But for now, have our latest predictions for the month of August adding in the Film Editing and Cinematography categories.

Introductions

Wesley Lovell: With the fall festivals just around the corner, there aren’t expected to be a lot of changes. I’ve added May December and made a handful of minor changes.
Pete Patrick: Not much has changed since last month. Waiting now for the fall festivals to weigh in.
Tripp Burton: (no revised predictions provided)
Thomas LaTourette: As the strikes go on, there is talk of delaying some of the movie releases until 2024. Nothing is set, But Dune 2 and The Color Purple are debating about following the lead of the Zendaya-starring Challengers and waiting until next year to release. It does make it a little harder to predict as both of those are films are predicted to score numerous Oscar nominations. At this point, I am still including them in these predictions, but wonder if that might change soon. I have also read that The Piano Lesson may or may not finish filming in time for its scheduled release. So, we will wait and see how this pans out. Another issue that may arise is that films that were released earlier in the year with full cast support may now do better than ones coming out now and in the upcoming months. Might this help films like Air and Past Lives? I do not know if it will, but it is adding a twist to the predictions.

The success of both Oppenheimer and Barbie at the box office makes them look likely to pull off picture and directing noms, with multiple others as well. Robert Downey Jr. has catapulted into the lead for supporting actor and Margot Robbie now looks poised to nab her third nomination. Both films look likely to get two to three acting noms each, along with a plethora of tech nominations. With nothing major coming out until October’s Killers of the Flower Moon, they should continue to garner Oscar attention. It will be interesting to see if Barbie is put forward as an adapted or original screenplay, is has been placed in both categories by other people. So, we will wait to see what news the next month brings.
