We’re looking at each individual category for the Oscars and what our thoughts are going into the final stretch. We’ve adjusted our thoughts based on the precursor associated with this category, Society of Composers & Lyricists. Below are our predictions in Best Original Score.

Best Original Score

Winner Predictions

  • Sinners (WL) (PP) (TL)

Runner-Up Predictions

  • One Battle After Another (WL) (PP) (TL)

(color and symbol key at top of page)

Wesley Lovell: I don’t see how Sinners loses. It’s the most honored score of the year and the rest of the nominees seem unlikely to overcome. Honestly, Hamnet was my favorite but I don’t think it’s likely to pull an upset.
Pete Patrick: Probably Sinners with its song score but if they’re looking strictly at orchestral scores, then One Battle After Another should prevail.
Thomas La Tourrette: This should be an easy win for Sinners. Music was a key element to the film in ways that it was not for any of the others. And even if people did not like the film, of which there are many, they often remarked on the music of the film. One Battle After Another would be its closest competitor, but it is hard to see that winning unless it has a sweep of epic proportions. The quiet music of Hamnet, the florid Frankenstein, and the overwrought Bugonia do not stand a chance. Sinners wins this one.
