A secondary group to the Art Directors Guild, the Set Decorators Society still gives us an idea of what will be popular with the Academy and by comparing this and the ADG, you can probably get a good guess of the eventual Production Design Oscar winner.

SET DECORATORS SOCIETY AWARDS

Legend:

Winner Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette

Runner-Up Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette

Best Comedy/Musical Décor/Design

Freakier Friday Nil
Kiss of the Spider Woman PP
The Phoenician Scheme WL PP TL
Roofman Nil
Wicked: For Good WL TL

Wesley Lovell: Not a single Oscar nominee in the batch, which makes Wicked: For Good a fairly safe bet but not an exclusive one.
Pete Patrick: I suppose any of the nominees could win but Kiss of the Spiderwoman has the most stylish sets and The Phoenician Scheme has the most innovative.
Thomas La Tourrette: Wicked: For Good should win, though the Academy did not even nominate it. It did win at the Costume Designers’ Guild, so I think that win shows strength from other guilds which gives it a good chance of winning here. If it does not, then look for The Phoenician Scheme or Kiss of the Spider Woman to take the award.

Best Period Décor/Design

Downton Abbey: The Grand Vinale Nil
Hamnet WL PP TL
Marty Supreme Nil
Sinners WL PP TL
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere Nil

Wesley Lovell: Sinners has dominated most categories it’s been nominated in, so I don’t see how it loses though it’s possible Hamnet stages a comeback.
Pete Patrick: Sinners has the most elaborate, but Hamnet has well-researched set design from decades earlier so either is possible.
Thomas La Tourrette: Sinners feels like the likely winner even though Hamnet probably had more sets. I do not think the other three nomines stand a chance.

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Décor/Design

Avatar: Fire and Ash TL
The Fantastic Four: First Steps WL
Frankenstein WL PP TL
How to Train Your Dragon Nil
Superman PP

Wesley Lovell: Frankenstein is likely to win the Oscar and those set pieces were extroardinary so it probably has no near competitors.
Pete Patrick: Frankenstein should win this by a country mile.
Thomas La Tourrette: Frankenstein will likely win this as it probably has the most real sets of any of the nominees. I imagine a lot of the others used much more CGI which will hurt their chances of winning. They all have strong designs but I expect Frankenstein to win.

Best Contemporary Décor/Design

Bugonia WL
F1 Nil
Jay Kelly Nil
One Battle After Another WL PP TL
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery PP TL

Wesley Lovell: It’s not often a contemporary film gets an Oscar nomination so it would be surprising if One Battle didn’t win.
Pete Patrick: One Battle After Another with its many interesting sets should win this easily.
Thomas La Tourrette: One Battle After Another will likely win, though Wake Up Dead Man or Bugonia stand reasonable chances of pulling an upset.
