One of the best predictors of the Oscars, especially changes in direction for the frontrunners.
BRITISH ACADEMY OF FILM & TELEVISION AWARDS
Legend:
Winner Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette
Runner-Up Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette
Best Film
Hamnet PP TL
Marty Supreme Nil
One Battle After Another WL PP TL
Sentimental Value Nil
Sinners WL
Wesley Lovell: We’ll see our first test of the One Battle/Sinners match up. We’ll go with conventional wisdom, which might change if Sinners takes the victory.
Pete Patrick: It’s possible that Britain’s own Hamnet will win but since that’s a shoo-in for Best British Film, I think Oscar favorite One Battle After Another is more likely for the top prize.
Thomas La Tourrette: One Battle After Another is poised to take this even beating out hometown hero William Shakespeare in Hamnet, probably its closest competition.
Best Animated Film
Elio PP
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain WL PP TL
Zootopia 2 WL TL
Wesley Lovell: KPop wasn’t nomintaed, so between these others, it might be a tight competition. Although Elio is more popular with animators, Zootopia was more popular with audiences. Of course, something small like Little Amélie could surprise.
Pete Patrick: The heavily adored Little Amélie should win this easily.
Thomas La Tourrette: Zootopia 2 seems the likeliest winner.
Best Director
Paul Thomas Anderson – One Battle After Another WL PP TL
Ryan Coogler – Sinners WL PP
Yorgos Lanthimos – Bugonia Nil
Jash Safdie – Marty Supreme Nil
Joachim Trier – Sentimental Value Nil
Chloé Zhao – Hamnet TL
Wesley Lovell: BAFTA is much less likely to take Sinners seriously as a directorial effort so I suspect this isn’t much of a competition.
Pete Patrick: PTA should win this handily with either Ryan Coogler and Chloe Zhao his closest runners-up.
Thomas La Tourrette: Paul Thomas Anderson has felt unstoppable and probably the British Academy will go for him as well. Chloé Zhao is probably the one person who might defeat him with a bias towards the British set Hamnet, but that seems unlikely.
Best Actor
Robert Aramayo – I Swear Nil
Timothée Chalamet – Marty Supreme WL PP TL
Leonardo DiCaprio – One Battle After Another PP TL
Ethan Hawke – Blue Moon Nil
Michael B. Jordan – Sinners WL
Jesse Plemons – Bugonia Nil
Wesley Lovell: Timothée Chalamet has to win this to remain the Oscar frontrunner. Michael B. Jordan or Leonardo DiCaprio winning will change the calculus.
Pete Patrick: Chalamet is favored but I’m going to go with a surprise win for DiCaprio.
Thomas La Tourrette: Timothée Chalamet should earn the BAFTA on his way to getting the Oscar.
Best Actress
Jessie Buckley – Hamnet WL PP TL
Rose Byrne – If I Had Legs I’d Kick You WL TL
Kate Hudson – Song Sung Blue Nil
Chase Infiniti – One Battle After Another Nil
Renate Reinsve – Sentimental Value PP
Emma Stone – Bugonia Nil
Wesley Lovell: Buckley is probably the biggest sure thing in the acting category with this group.
Pete Patrick: A loss for Buckley would be a major shock.
Thomas La Tourrette: Jessie Buckley should have a speech prepared as she is by far the front runner.
Best Supporting Actor
Benicio Del Toro – One Battle After Another Nil
Jacob Elordi – Frankenstein WL PP
Paul Mescal – Hamnet TL
Peter Mullan – I Swear Nil
Sean Penn – One Battle After Another Nil
Stellan Skarsgård – Sentimental Value WL PP TL
Wesley Lovell: This could be a crapshoot. So many of these actors have a chance and while Stellan Skarsgård has sympathy on his side, I could imagine one of the others sweeping in.
Pete Patrick: Probably Skarsgård or Elordi but two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has never won a BAFTA so this could be his makeup prize.
Thomas La Tourrette: Stellan Skarsgård’s director beats out Paul Mescal’s playwright.
Best Supporting Actress
Odessa A’zion – Marty Supreme Nil
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas – Sentimental Value WL PP TL
Wunmi Mosaku – Sinners PP
Carey Mulligan – The Ballad of Wallis Island Nil
Teyana Taylor – One Battle After Another WL TL
Emily Watson – Hamnet Nil
Wesley Lovell: Teyana Taylor’s the Oscar frontrunner so she should be here as well but I wouldn’t count out Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas.
Pete Patrick: Lilleaas seems like an easy winner but England’s own Wunmi Mosaku could pull out a surprise win.
Thomas La Tourrette: This will probably not go the way of the Oscar and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas will win.
Best Original Screenplay
I Swear Nil
Marty Supreme Nil
The Secret Agent Nil
Sentimental Value WL PP TL
Sinners WL PP TL
Wesley Lovell: This might be a tight race between Sinners and Sentimental Value even if at the Oscars it wouldn’t be.
Pete Patrick: Sentimental Value seems likely, but Sinners makes for a potent competitor.
Thomas La Tourrette: In a tight race, I expect Sinners to just out pace Sentimental Value.
Best Adapted Screenplay
The Ballad of Wallis Island Nil
Bugonia Nil
Hamnet WL PP TL
One Battle After Another WL PP TL
Pillion Nil
Best Casting
I Swear Nil
Marty Supreme Nil
One Battle After Another WL PP TL
Sentimental Value Nil
Sinners WL PP TL
Wesley Lovell: Although I think the Academy will go with Sinners, I suspect BAFTA will pick One Battle.
Pete Patrick: Sinners with strong enormous cast should be an easy winner.
Thomas La Tourrette: Sinners should prevail here like I think it will at the Oscars.
Best Original Score
Bugonia Nil
Frankenstein PP
Hamnet TL
One Battle After Another WL
Sinners WL PP TL
Wesley Lovell: Sinners might not be the strong frontrunner in many BAFTA categories but even they can’t deny them this award.
Pete Patrick: Sinners probably, but a surprise win for Frankenstein is also possible.
Thomas La Tourrette: Sinners should take this one.
Best Editing
F1 TL
A House of Dynamite Nil
Marty Supreme WL
One Battle After Another WL PP TL
Sinners PP
Wesley Lovell: One Battle is currently in the Oscar lead so I expect it to win easily.
Pete Patrick: Take your pick. This is really too close to call between One Battle After Another and Sinners.
Thomas La Tourrette: The excitingly edited F1 should squeak out a win.
Best Cinematography
Frankenstein TL
Marty Supreme Nil
One Battle After Another PP
Sinners WL PP TL
Train Dreams WL
Wesley Lovell: At the Oscars, Sinners won’t have to sweat much but at BAFTA, I could see Train Dreams taking over.
Pete Patrick: This is another one that’s too close to call.
Thomas La Tourrette: Sinners wins for its moody work.
Best Production Design
Frankenstein WL PP TL
Hamnet PP TL
Marty Supreme Nil
One Battle After Another Nil
Sinners WL
Wesley Lovell: Frankenstein would seem like the film to beat.
Pete Patrick: Frankenstein should take this one easily.
Thomas La Tourrette: Frankenstein should easily win here.
Best Costume Design
Frankenstein WL PP TL
Hamnet PP
Marty Supreme Nil
Sinners WL TL
Wicked: For Good Nil
Wesley Lovell: Frankenstein is likely in line for another prize with this one.
Pete Patrick: This is another one that Frankenstein should take easily.
Thomas La Tourrette: This should be another easy win for Frankenstein.
Best Makeup & Hair
Frankenstein WL PP TL
Hamnet Nil
Marty Supreme Nil
Sinners WL PP
Wicked: For Good TL
Wesley Lovell: Another likely win for Frankenstein.
Pete Patrick: A tough call, but probably Frankenstein.
Thomas La Tourrette: Frankenstein should continue to roll through the tech categories with a win here.
Best Sound
F1 WL TL
Frankenstein Nil
One Battle After Another Nil
Sinners PP TL
Warfare WL PP
Wesley Lovell: F1 is a lot more popular than expected and this is the only place I could see them honoring the film.
Pete Patrick: Should be Sinners.
Thomas La Tourrette: F1 likely dominates the competition here.
Best Special Visual Effects
Avatar: Fire and Ash WL PP TL
F1 Nil
Frankenstein WL PP
How to Train Your Dragon TL
The Lost Bus Nil
Wesley Lovell: Avatar is the prohibitive frontrunner.
Pete Patrick: Avatar’s only win of the day.
Thomas La Tourrette: It is difficult to picture anything but Avatar: Fire and Ash winning this award.
Best Film Not in the English Language
It Was Just an Accident TL
The Secret Agent WL PP
Sentimental Value WL PP TL
Sirât Nil
The Voice of Hind Rajab Nil
Wesley Lovell: Sentimental Value has that Best Picture nomination and that should be enough to carry it to victory.
Pete Patrick: This is likely to go to Sentimental Value, with The Secret Agent poised to upset.
Thomas La Tourrette: Sentimental Value should easily win this. I do not see the others as having a chance.
Best Documentary
2000 Meters to Andriivka TL
Apocalypse in the Tropics Nil
Cover-Up WL
Mr. Nobody Against Putin PP
The Perfect Neighbor WL PP TL
Wesley Lovell: The Perfect Neighbor seems like a safe bet.
Pete Patrick: Should be The Perfect Neighbor in a walk.
Thomas La Tourrette: The Perfect Neighbor is the likely winner.
Best British Short Animation
Cardboard WL
Solstice PP TL
Two Black Boys in Paradise WL PP TL
Wesley Lovell: I’m not certain but I’m leading towards Annie-nominated Cardboard.
Pete Patrick: No idea, just guessing.
Thomas La Tourrette: This is purely a guess.
Best British Short Film
Welcome Home Freckles TL
Magid/Zafar WL
Nostalgie PP
Terence PP
This Is Endometriosis WL TL
Wesley Lovell: I’m out of my depth on this one having not seen any of them. I’ll have to take a wild guess.
Pete Patrick: More guessing.
Thomas La Tourrette: I am purely guessing here, going by the titles that made me smile most.
Best Children’s & Family Film
Arco WL
Boong Nil
Lilo & Stitch PP TL
Zootopia 2 WL PP TL
Wesley Lovell: Acro couldn’t get nominated in the main animation category, so I doubt it can overcome Zootopia 2. The others don’t feel like contenders.
Pete Patrick: Should be Zootopia 2 unless they don’t want to go with another animated winner, then the live version of Lilo & Stitch would be my best guess for an alterative.
Thomas La Tourrette: Zootopia 2 should repeat its win for animated feature here.
Best British Film
28 Years Later Nil
The Ballad of Wallis Island Nil
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy Nil
Die My Love Nil
H Is for Hawk Nil
Hamnet WL PP TL
I Swear WL PP TL
Mr. Burton Nil
Pillion Nil
Steve Nil
Wesley Lovell: Hamnet is the only Best Picture nominee in this bunch so it’s pretty well assured unless there’s a Hamnet push in the top category and then they might go with one of the others.
Pete Patrick: No contest here. Hamnet will win easily.
Thomas La Tourrette: Hamnet should have this one sewn up.
Outstanding British Debut
Nil
Myrid Carten – A Want in Her Nil
Akinola Davies Jr., Wale Davies – My Father’s Shadow WL TL
Jack King, Hollie Bryan, Lucy Meer – The Ceremony Nil
Harry Lighton – Pillion WL PP TL
Cal McMau, Hunter Andrews, Eoin Doran – Wasteman PP
Wesley Lovell: Pillion has other nominations from this group so Harry Lighton has to be considered the frontrunner.
Pete Patrick: Harry Lighton for the heavily publicized Pillion should take this one.
Thomas La Tourrette: I will go with Harry Lighton for Pillion as it was the one film also nominated for Best British Film.
Rising Star Award
Nil
Robert Aramayo PP TL
Miles Caton WL
Chase Infiniti WL PP TL
Archie Madekwe Nil
Posy Sterling Nil
Wesley Lovell: Sinners is the most popular film one of these actors is in, so I’m leaning his way but Chase Infiniti could also triumph.
Pete Patrick: Britain’s own Robert Aramayo should take this one with Chase Infiniti and Miles Caton his closest competition.
Thomas La Tourrette: With a nomination for best actor, Robert Aramazo should easily get this, though I have been proved wrong in the past with predicting this award.
