Let’s start with an interesting note about category placement. Unlike the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, the Costume Designers Guild don’t allow for cross-pollination, which explains why Barbie got put into Fantasy rather than contemporary even though the film is in a contemporary setting. Now to the nitty-gritty.
Looking over the films that we thought would be contenders this year, there are two major omissions. The Color Purple and Wonka. Color Purple‘s costumes were one of the few elements that were universally lauded. Its absence here suggests the film could be heading for a dire 1- or 2-nomination announcement. Wonka missing is also rather surprising Since it clearly had more vibrant costumes than The Hunger Games though perhaps not as many. Other titles that missed and see their hopes doomed: Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., Asteroid City, Chevalier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Indiana Jones, Priscilla, Rustin, and The Zone of Interest.
So what will be nominated? Based on the list below, you can probably expect all five of the period nominees to compete along with Barbie. A case could be made for The Hunger Games and Rebel Moon, but I think Barbie might take the place of either Maestro, Killers of the Flower Moon, or Oppenheimer and then call it a day. I’d be shocked if Barbie, Napleon, and Poor Things weren’t on the final list.
