What will win at the Costume Designers Guild? We’re pretty certain and, unfortunately, the Oscar race may not be decided with this one.

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD AWARDS

Best Period Costume Design

Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Napoleon (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)
Oppenheimer (Peter)
Poor Things (Wesley, Thomas, RU:Peter)

Wesley Lovell: Poor Things has the types of clothing voters love to recognize, period ones. While the other films take place in “periods,” as the category name should imply, the only other one that was long enough ago to generate fancy costumes is Napoleon, which might be the runner up. That said, Killers of the Flower Moon worked with Native American designers to come up with its looks and that might appeal to a group dedicated to realism.
Pete Patrick: Oppenheimer should continue its awards domination here, but the more inventive Poor Things could surprise.
Thomas La Tourette: Even though their period costumes are on the outlandish side, I expect Poor Things to win this award. They were able to be more inventive than the others and I think that will be rewarded. Killers of the Flower Moon did show clothing that we don’t normally see, so they could win, but I think it will go to Poor Things.

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costume Design

Barbie (Wesley, Peter, Thomas)
Haunted Mansion
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (RU:Peter, RU:Thomas)
The Little Mermaid
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (RU:Wesley)

Wesley Lovell: The only Oscar nominee on this list should win by default, but Barbie is going back and forth with Poor Things as frontrunner for the Oscars, so even with other Oscar nominees in the list, it would surely win. If there’s an upset, Rebel Moon‘s bountiful numbers of costumes might just take it.
Pete Patrick: With little competition here, Barbie should take this one easily.
Thomas La Tourette: Barbie’s outfits may have been inspired by the dolls’ collections, but I think they will win this even though they have the most traditional outfits of the group. They have become iconic.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

American Fiction
May December (RU:Peter)
Nyad
Renfield (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)
Saltburn (Wesley, Peter, Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: Saltburn seems to be the contemporary film with the most laudatory design elements as evinced by the countless precursors it’s been winning. I could see Renfield, the only other one with an eccentric period-esque character as a potential upsetter.
Pete Patrick: Saltburn had the most interesting designs but May December and American Fiction also featured nice designs so it could really go to any one of the three.
Thomas La Tourette: The sumptuous costumes of Saltburn, especially the costume party scene, should easily win this category.
