The Costume Designers Guild had something to say about this year’s winners but was it enough to point us in the right direction?

Wesley Lovell: The CDG didn’t help much with predictions as, unlike the Art Directors Guild, the CDG didn’t have Poor Things and Barbie competing against one another. Both won. Barbie has the most precursors but Poor Things has the one more crucial: BAFTA. If BAFTA can’t go for Barbie, can the Academy? I’m leaning towards no but it’s a close race.
Pete Patrick: This is a toss-up between the elaborate designs for Poor Things and the imaginative designs for Barbie. Either could win.
Thomas La Tourrette: This is also a race between two films, and I am not sure which way it will go. Barbie has won more precursors and definitely created some iconic looks. Poor Things has a more flamboyant set of costumes and recently won the BAFTA. The guild did us no favors by putting them into different categories. (Barbie in Sci-Fi/Fantasy?) They each won their categories. Only the BAFTA going to Poor Things gives a hint where the Oscar might go, but I am not sure if that is the case. The designs of Poor Things were striking, but a bit over the top for my liking. The Academy has often gone for that in the past, but I wonder if they will stay with the calmer but colorful designs of Barbie.
