The Globes seem to be going the same direction as the other two televised awards shows by going for 6 nominees in each category. The Globes already had too many bites at the Oscar-prognosticating apple and now they want more. The only major surprise so far was Payal Kapadia making it into the Best Director slate over Jon M. Chu. It was thought Wicked would be stronger than this and it’s doing well enough but not nearly as well as it could be. Several late releases aren’t showing up here as they are going for several films that released earlier in the year or films that played major festivals as all of the directing slate seems to be.
Speaking of Wicked, it only picked up four nominations, which belies its strength. The misses in Director, Screenplay, and Supporting Actor suggest a weakness. Of course, it was probably one of the last films Globes voters saw (if they even watched it), so it’s possible this is a fluke. Also a fluke is the fact that the Drama Actress category is filled with nominees that are their film’s only nomination with, strangely, Fernanda Torres from I’m Still Here being the only one whose film has one other nomination. Anora and The Substance did well in the Comedy/Musical category, which is strange considering their subjects. The international flavor of these nominations is very obvious with so many nominations outside of the non-English language film category. We may be seeing what an unfettered Globe voting body will do, though these are still very prognosticaty.
