For our October update, several films moved on from one stage to the next. Today, we’ll look at where each film moved and look at a new ranking of each of the contenders.

Before we get to the movement, a couple of notes on this month’s update. Four films were pulled from the 2024 contenders slate due to the likelihood that they will not be releasing as expected. Those films are: Klara and the Sun, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, The Nightingale, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The latter of these is the only one I’m confident won’t release in 2024 but I have a high degree of confidence in the other three. In addition, a bunch of films moved from stage 1 to stage 2. When I originally started shifting films to stage 2, I often waited for release dates, MPAA ratings, and lengths but those aren’t stage 1 qualifications. As such, I moved everything that had genuinely completed stage 1 items to stage 2. As such, there’s an atypically large number of shifts there. Beyond that, everything has been as normal.

Moving to Stage 2

We have sixteen films moving into Stage 2. This means that these films have finally had all of their background information set. Just click on the links below to see their pages. What is most often missing at this stage is information on distribution, MPAA ratings, and length. Rarely, the missing information is credited individuals, such as composers, editors, and cinematographers.

Small Things Like These (Stage 2 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
The Brutalist (Stage 2 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Stage 2 of 5; Pending Eligibility)

The Life of Chuck (Stage 2 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Magazine Dreams (Stage 2 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
The Damned (Stage 2 of 5; Pending Eligibility)

Moving to Stage 3

There are a further four films that have moved on to Stage 3. This means their theatrical releases have already closed or a contender has been released wide (none of these films).

The Wild Robot (Stage 3 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Transformers One (Stage 3 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Megalopolis (Stage 3 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Girls Will Be Girls (Stage 3 of 5; Pending Eligibility)

Moving to Stage 4

If a film has surpassed a month in release, it is eligible for a move to Stage 4, but must first have already completed Stage 3 as well, so a lot of films stay in Stage 3 for a relatively long period of time while others move to Stage 4 rather quickly. We have only four films that have arrived in Stage 4.

The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat (Stage 4 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Stage 4 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Alien: Romulus (Stage 4 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
It Ends with Us (Stage 4 of 5; Pending Eligibility)

Moving to Stage 5

Stage 5 is the final stage before the critics, guilds, and other organizations start handing out awards. This will be the final stage all of our films will reach prior to December (at the earliest). This means they have fully completed their box office runs.

Four films have moved into Stage 5 as of this update. They are below:

Dìdi (Stage 5 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Fancy Dance (Stage 5 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
The Imaginary (Stage 5 of 5; Pending Eligibility)
Longlegs (Stage 5 of 5; Pending Eligibility)

With that, the number of films waiting at Stage 5 for precursors to begin is now twenty-eight.

And those are the films that are moving to new stages. Now, let’s look at the top ranked films in each of the five stages. We’ll look primarily at the top ten at most stages. Those with fewer than ten will have all titles listed while stage 5 will have twenty.
