Wesley Lovell: With the ASC confirming what we thought about Oppenheimer being the frontrunner, there is no other choice. If there’s a second place finisher, it’s probably Poor Things thanks to its use of color and black-and-white as well as it’s oblique camera angles and other noticeable efforts.
Pete Patrick: This should be among the categories that Oppenheimer should take fairly easily but both Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things are poised to upset.
Thomas La Tourrette: The Academy continues its love affair with black-and-white films. Two, Maestro and Oppenheimer, had several scenes filmed in black-and-white, and El Conde was totally filmed that way. It does seem to be a way to get a nomination lately. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema’s work on Oppenheimer is practically guaranteed to win him the Oscar this year, on his fourth film with director Christopher Nolan. His use of different formats of film, especially the black-and-white IMAX film created just for Oppenheimer will help him achieve that goal. He has won over two thirds of the precursors, including the recent guild award. His next award will be the Oscar.
