Wesley Lovell: Emilia Pérez is competing here with I’m Still Here, both Oscar nominees for Best Picture. Pérez has thirteen nominations to I’m Still Here‘s three but recent controversy may hurt the film’s chances. Ultimately, since it’s unlikely to win Best Picture, it’s probably the odds-on favorite to win here although its chances did dim a bit.
Pete Patrick: Emilia Pérez is still my prediction for Best International Feature but is on shaky ground with the fallout from Karla Sofía Gascón’s recently-surfaced tweets which have cast a pall over the film before voting has even begun. If it falters, then Brazil’s I’m Still Here seems like the obvious film to replace it.
Thomas La Tourrette: For a long time, I did not feel like Emilia Pérez could be beat in this category, but now I am questioning that. There does seem to be a backlash against the movie, though I am not sure what that is all about. Its audience rating on Rottentomatoes.com has plummeted down to 18%, though everyone I know who has seen has liked it considerably. If it were being voted on today, I think it would still win, but with the awards almost four weeks out, voters may change their minds. This could benefit either The Seed of the Sacred Fig or I’m Still Here. Neither The Girl with the Needle nor Flow stand a chance of winning. I’m Still Here with its high profile win for best actress at the Golden Globes seems the more likely beneficiary, and I will now predict that it may upset what had been the long perceived front runner.
