We’re looking at each individual category for the Oscars and what our thoughts are going into the final stretch. We’ll adjust our thoughts based on the precursor associated with this category, Visual Effects Society. Below are our predictions in Best Visual Effects.

Best Visual Effects

  • Better Man
  • Dune: Part Two (WL O) (PP P) [New] (TL O)
  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
  • Wicked

Runner-Up Predictions

  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (WL O) (PP O) (TL O)

Wesley Lovell: This race just became a lot tighter. The Visual Effects Society went with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes although we think Dune: Part Two will win the Oscar. Could this parlay to a shift in frontrunner status? Perhaps. Let’s wait for BAFTA to decide of Dune is done. For now, I’ll stick with it as the slight leader.
Pete Patrick: The visual effects in Dune: Part Two have drawn attention throughout 2024 making it a likely winner with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes probably its closest competition.
Thomas La Tourrette: Even though Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes just won the top award from the Visual Effects Society, I still think that the Oscar is more likely to go to Dune: Part Two which won the most awards of the evening from the VES. Winning the top prize is a big thing, but that is the only award that Kingdom won. Until this, I figured that Dune: Part Two easily would win the Oscar though I am second guessing myself now. However, none of the earlier Planet of the Apes reboot films managed to win the Oscar, so it would be a bit strange that the fourth of the series would finally win. The original Dune won this award, and that makes it more likely that the even more effects heavy sequel could win too. I will stick with my first feeling that Dune: Part Two wins the Oscar.
