One of the most accurate guild precursors is the American Society of Cinematographers. In recent years, their unexpected nominations have landed those individuals Oscar nominations. The winners have been more accurate in recent years but they also like to honor longtime, prominent cinematographers, so they aren’t always accurate. Here are our predictions.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS AWARDS

Legend:

Winner Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette

Runner-Up Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette

Best Cinematography

The Brutalist WL PP TL
A Complete Unknown Nil
Conclave PP
Dune: Part Two WL
Maria Nil
Nosferatu TL
Wicked Nil

Wesley Lovell: The future Oscar winner, Dune: Part Two may well pull this one off but I wouldn’t be shocked to see one of the other films win the prize since Dune‘s popularity seems to have cratered at the wrong moment.
Pete Patrick: This should go to either The Brutalist or Conclave, probably in that order.
Thomas La Tourrette: The Brutalist is the most likely winner, though Nosferatu did have striking work and could upset. Nosferatu has actually won more precursors, but The Brutalist just won BAFTA which shows its present strength.

Documentary

Nil
Gaucho Gaucho Nil
Photographer: Dan Winters Life Is Once. Forever. WL PP TL
Porcelain War WL PP TL

Wesley Lovell: A documentary about a photographer. I don’t think there’s a better fit for this group. Though Porcelain War isn’t to be underestimated.
Pete Patrick: Porcelain War about life and art during the Ukrainian War should take this over the Episode 3 of the TV series on Dan Winters.
Thomas La Tourrette: The difficulty of shooting during a war should help Porcelain War win this.

Spotlight Award

Nil
The Girl with the Needle WL PP TL
Nawi Nil
Nickel Boys WL PP TL

Wesley Lovell: Nickel Boys was robbed of a nomination in the top category, even when they made space for 7 films. It deserves this one too but it’s unfortunate, it was unfairly ignored elsewhere.
Pete Patrick: This should be an easy win for Nickel Boys over The Girl with the Needle.
Thomas La Tourrette: Both Nickel Boys and The Girl with the Needle were noted for their camera work, so one of them should win.
