The Costume Designers Guild releasing midweek isn’t unusual this year but their choices might give us an idea how strong some films are going into the Oscars.

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILDAWARDS

Legend:

Winner Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette

Runner-Up Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette

Best Period Costume Design

The Book of Clarence Nil
Gladiator II WL PP
Maria TL
Nosferatu WL PP TL
Saturday Night Nil

Wesley Lovell: This will be between the two Oscar nominees. Nosferatu is a traditional kind of winner, so I suspect they’ll go for that. Don’t discount Gladiator II. There’s also Maria, which probably came close to an Oscar nomination.
Pete Patrick: Nosferatu‘s costumes were the most audacious, but Gladiator II‘s were almost as stunning.
Thomas La Tourette: This could go to the fantastical work of Nosferatu, the elegant gowns of Maria, or the Roman epic of Gladiator II. Nosferatu had the more interesting work, over a wider range of actors, so it might win over the gowns mostly worn by Angelina Jolie in Maria.

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costume Design

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Nil
Borderlands Nil
Dune: Part Two WL PP TL
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Nil
Wicked WL PP TL

Wesley Lovell: There’s only one Oscar nominee in this bunch and it’s currently the Oscar frontrunner. Wicked is an easy choice. That Dune: Part Two didn’t score an Oscar nomination suggests it’s weaker than originally though so it or Furiosa are probably running a tight second.
Pete Patrick: Everybody loves Wicked, but almost as many love Dune: Part Two as well.
Thomas La Tourette: Wicked would seem to have this one sewn up as it works its way towards the Oscar. The original Dune won this three years ago, but Dune: Part Two does not seem as likely to repeat.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

Challengers PP
Conclave WL TL
Emilia Pérez Nil
The Fall Guy Nil
The Substance WL PP TL

Wesley Lovell: Another where the only Oscar nominee should come out on top. Conclave might not have an easy time of it because The Substance is the kind of film that could be an upset winner with its unique quasi-futuristic styles.
Pete Patrick: If the emphasis is on “contemporary” then the many costumes in either The Substance or Challengers should prevail, whereas the other designs could be considered classical.  The only thing that makes them contemporary is that they are set in the here and now.
Thomas La Tourette: Both The Substance and The Fall Guy had some interesting costumes, but they might go for the later work from The Substance as The Fall Guy may have opened too early for people to remember. An interesting choice would be Conclave for the subtle differences between the various cardinals.
