The Costume Designers Guild is next up on Thursday. Will they confirm current thinking on the Oscar categories? The Sci-Fi category might not have bearing until it does.

Runner-Up Predictions:
Wesley Lovell Pete Patrick Thomas LaTourrette

Best Period Costume Design

Downton Abbey: The Grand Vinale Nil
Frankenstein WL PP TL
Hamnet WL PP TL
Hedda Nil
Sinners Nil

Wesley Lovell: There are three possibilities for this category. Expected winner Frankenstein carries through or Hamnet or Sinners stage a surprise victory. The latter two options would likely boost those films towards a shift in direction for Best Picture.
Pete Patrick: A tough category.  Any of the nominees could win it but I think that either the eye-pooping costumes for Frankenstein or the many interesting costumes for Hamnet will take it.
Thomas La Tourrette: Frankenstein is the likely Oscar winner, and I imagine it will win here as well.

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costume Design

Avatar: Fire and Ash WL TL
How to Train Your Dragon PP
Thunderbolts* Nil
Tron: Ares Nil
Wicked: For Good WL PP TL

Wesley Lovell: Although the surprise nomination of Avatar: Fire and Ash at the Oscars makes it the only Oscar nominee on the list, I could easily imagine Wicked: For Good winning over what appears to be a fluke Oscar nomination. That said, that fluke could pan out for Avatar in pushing it towards a win here.
Pete Patrick: Wicked: For Good should take this one.  The live action of How to Train Your Dragon is at least something new and should be the closest runner-up.
Thomas La Tourrette: Avatar is the only Oscar nominated film in this bunch which should guarantee its win. Wicked: For Good deserves it but with the original winning last year, I imagine it will not be a repeat winner.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

Bugonia WL
F1: The Movie TL
One Battle After Another WL TL
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery PP
Weapons PP

Wesley Lovell: Contemporary is always a difficult category to predict because what they like doesn’t often fit with conventional wisdom. I think all but F1 have a chance of winning and while I’m leaning towards One Battle, I could easily imagine Bugonia winning.
Pete Patrick: I have no idea, but I’m rooting for my two favorites in the category, Wake Up Dead Man and Weapons.
Thomas La Tourrette: One Battle has the distinction of having some costumes from 16 years apart which should give it a leg up over the other nominees.
