Only one of these categories really speaks to the Oscar competition but not everyone is represented so we’ll see how accurate they can be if they can even pick one of the Oscar nominees to win.

MAKE-UP ARTISTS & HAIR STYLISTS GUILD AWARDS

Best Special Make-up Effects

Golda (RU:Wesley)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (RU:Peter, RU:Thomas)
Maestro (Thomas)
Poor Things (Wesley, Peter)
Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire

Wesley Lovell: Three of the Oscar nominees are here and any one of them could win but I’m going for what I think is the Oscar frontrunner, Poor Things. I could see a case made for Maestro, but Golda has more obvious makeup work, so I’m placing my runner-up bet there.
Pete Patrick: Poor Things is the most inventive, but they do like Guardians of the Galaxy, so this one seems uncertain.
Thomas La Tourette: Maestro did a good job of turning Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein, so I imagine it will win, even over Guardians of the Galaxy and Rebel Moon, which used a lot more makeup.

Best Period and/or Character Make-up

Barbie (Peter)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Maestro (Thomas, RU:Peter)
Oppenheimer (RU:Wesley)
Poor Things (Wesley, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: Poor Things finally faces the film I think it is most contending against the Oscars. Oppenheimer has a lot of aging makeup on display, which could get their attention, but Poor Things has a lot of makeup too and it’s far more obvious, which might give it the edge.
Pete Patrick: Probably Barbie, but Maestro wouldn’t be a surprise.
Thomas La Tourette: The realistic work of Maestro trumps the more outlandish work in Poor Things.

Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling

Barbie (Wesley, RU:Peter)
Chevalier (RU:Thomas)
The Color Purple
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Thomas)
Maestro (Peter, RU:Wesley)

Wesley Lovell: Barbie had tons of hairstyles on display from all the Barbies and Kens. I think it has a strong chance at taking this. However, it has to first knock off the only Oscar nominee of the bunch, Maestro, which I ultimately think it will do.
Pete Patrick: Let’s spread the wealth and give this one to Maestro.
Thomas La Tourette: I will go with Guardians of the Galaxy over Chevalier just because there was more to work with. But this is an odd category and it could go any way.

Best Contemporary Make-up

Candy Cane Lane
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)
The Haunted Mansion (Wesley)
Nyad (RU:Peter)
Saltburn (Peter, Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: The Haunted Mansion has a lot of varying periods to work with and I think that can give it the edge over the less obvious work in the other films and the visual effects-aided work on Guardians, the likeliest runner-up.
Pete Patrick: Give it to Saltburn, please.
Thomas La Tourette: Saltburn has less to do with makeup than Guardians, but I wonder if it might win. I do wonder how Guardians got into this category.

Best Contemporary Hair Styling

Candy Cane Lane (Wesley, RU:Thomas)
Joy Ride
Nyad (RU:Peter)
Pain Hustlers (RU:Wesley)
Saltburn (Peter, Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: The Christmas-themed Candy Cane Lane has a lot of wild hair styles, at least more so than the other four films on the list, so I’m giving it the edge, though Pain Hustlers could also win giving its recent-period work, which apparently isn’t period enough for those categories.
Pete Patrick: Go ahead and give this one to Saltburn, too.
Thomas La Tourette: I will go with the elegance of Saltburn, though I have no idea what Candy Cane Lane used.
