Wesley Lovell: While it might have seemed like a tight race at the beginning with Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Gosling driving the race but Gosling has always felt like an also-ran and Downey Jr.’s longstanding career in Hollywood and his gamesmanship in launching the MCU will likely lead to his first, and let’s be honest, only Oscar.
Pete Patrick: Downey has won almost as many awards in his category as Da’Vine Joy Randolph in hers (editor’s note: 22 for Downey Jr. to 49 for Randolph). Ryan Gosling has a lot of supporters, but he’s running way behind Downey at this point.
Thomas La Tourrette: This has been a race between two actors, though Robert Downey Jr. has had an edge over Ryan Gosling the entire time. Downey has been around Hollywood for years and is looked on as due. He also created a slimy, evil, and vindictive character that became the main foil to Robert Oppenheimer. I think it is the best work he has done. Gosling was looked on as an equal to Margot Robbie’s Barbie and may have even gotten better reviews than his non-nominated costar. He is a Hollywood favorite, but I do not think he had the same impact in his movie as Downey. It seemed like it would be a closer race than it has proved to be, but when it came to the major awards, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and, most importantly, SAG, Downey came out on top. Look for Robert Downey Jr. to easily collect his first Oscar.
